on monday mar 15, j boogie (om records) returns to the flat for rocksteady mondays as a guest of dj sun. also appearing for the first in houston will be ryat an electronic music duo, which will do a live early set. both acts will be on their way to sxsw 2010 in austin. j boogie also appears along with dj sun for a showcase at scoot in on mar 18, in austin.

DJ DRM arrives on Thursday February 5th to perform as DJ SUN's guest at Block 21 (Thursday and Friday, the 5th and 6th, resp) and to do a special guest performance at The Flat for ROCKSTEADY MONDAYS.
DJ SUN embarks on a couple of dates to promote the PARA EP in CA: the 12th of February in Sebastopol, CA for Juke Joint with DJ MALARKEY. On Friday February 13th, DJ SUN performs at Club Six, in SF, as a guest of TOPH ONE. J BOOGIE, who delivered one of the remixes on the PARA EP guests, as well.
DJ SUN'S SOULARIUM brings Houston's House of Blues a flavorful monthly mix of nationally recognized djs and musicians. Each month's SOULARIUM will bring the groove heavy, and versatile sounds you have come to expect and love from renowned and award-winning dj and producer DJ SUN.
This month, on Sunday February 22nd, DJ SUN hosts the PARA EP Release Party with special guest J BOOGIE (SF, OM Records). $5 cover. doors: 8pm.

{ dj melodic benefit }
on sunday november 16, the houston music community and many supporters of soular grooves came together for a wonderful benefit, organized by the incomparable tina zulu (zulu creative). it was a beautiful afternoon (see pics in the gallery) and perfect for the occasion of assisting dj melodic in his road to recovery from the cardiac arrest he suffered on november 3. 
the free radicals, dj chicken george, and dj sun all entertained the crowd at block 21, while a raffle was being held. sincere thank yous to all involved with organizing the event and all the donors who offered great prizes!

on monday november 3, dj melodic had cardiac arrest. he was revived and treated succesfully at st. luke's hospital. on november 8, he was moved out of icu. he is now on his way to a full recovery. we have organized a benefit at block 21 (2420 washington) to assit with his medical bills and other expenses, on sunday november 16, from 1pm-4pm.

dj sun's next ep entitled "para" will be released on vinyl and cd in december. featured on the ep, are 3 new tracks along with remixes from dj sabo (sol selectas) , j boogie (om records) , and genre jazz (presto and mhax montes). this release will coincide with a campaign that appears in urb magazine which features dj sun and 13 other up and coming artists. a sticker sheet and profile will be included in the magazine. look out for release parties around town and throughout the us (well... perhaps dc, ny, sf, l.a. ) a date has been scheduled for dj sun's next visit to esl in dc: december 27th. a release party for the para ep is scheduled for that night, as well.

dj sun embarks on a set of dj-ing performances at eighteenth street lounge. this weekend marks the release of radio retaliation, thievery corporation's latest album. dj sun performs friday the 26th of september as the headlining dj and then on saturday the 27th as the opening dj for thievery corporation.

the soular grooves djs will be playing at the treehouse, the upstairs patio at the grove, overlooking discovery green, in downtown houston. a rotation of current soular grooves djs and special guests will provide the vintage soular grooves sounds, starting thursday september 4th and every thursday, friday, saturday, thereafter. 8:30pm-11:30pm treehouse at the grove

on saturday, june 14, at 7pm, dj sun opens for extra golden at the the orange show.
Extra Golden was formed rather casually in May of 2004 when Ian Eagleson, Alex Minoff and Otieno Jagwasi began fiddling with each other’s compositions in an apartment in the Buru Buru neighborhood of Nairobi. For rhythmic inspiration, the trio used isolated drum tracks by Onyango Wuod Omari that Eagleson had recorded earlier that year. After several song ideas were hashed out, Omari came by the apartment and, tapping pencils on a table, familiarized himself with them. The next afternoon, the four musicians met at the Annex Club and Restaurant in Kariobangi South Estate. Positioning themselves on a concrete slab between the tables and the restrooms, they set up a laptop and mixing board, a broken-down drumset, a couple of amplifiers and several microphones. Three hours later they packed up and left, the majority of Ok-Oyot System completed.
A year after this initial recording session, Otieno Jagwasi succumbed to his long struggle with liver disease. Besides causing great sadness, Otieno’s passing spurred Eagleson and Minoff to bring these recordings to the public. Chicago’s Thrill Jockey Records agreed to release the album and, in May 2006 – exactly two years after the group’s formation – Extra Golden was introduced to the world.
Ok-Oyot System’s unique blend of Kenyan Benga music with American Rock and other, assorted African guitar stylings met with widespread critical praise. The immediate demand for Extra Golden concerts was deafening. After months of hard work and determination, that demand was finally met, as the group (now featuring popular Benga star Opiyo Bilongo) arrived at the 2006 Chicago World Music Festival. Many weeks of engagements followed, after which Extra Golden holed up in a house in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains to tackle the task of recording a follow-up to their beloved debut. Five days later the group emerged with twenty new tracks, eight of which constitute Hera Ma Nono.
At first, Extra Golden seems an unlikely entity. However, this project that was birthed on a whim, a crazy “what if…” scenario between friends, has steadily grown into a fully-realized, musical dynamo. It remains to be seen where Extra Golden will go next, but with more touring and recording undoubtedly ahead, the future sounds good.

the international festival is upon us again for the last two weekends in april. the soular grooves family has been invited to perform on the world music stage. djs sun, josh zulu, simiyu, and kool emdee will all share sets in between the main artists performing at the international festival. the headliners this year are: buddy guy (april 19th), the wailers (april 20th), the neville brothers (april 26th), and taj mahal (april 27th). also performing on the world music stage: the lowrider band (featuring the original members of war, april 26th) and grupo fantasma(april 19th).
